The Science Behind Our Ingredients
At Olā Nutri Vitalis, we believe tradition and science can support each other. Our products are inspired by long-standing Andean food culture, but we also follow emerging scientific research on the natural compounds found in maca, camu camu and lucuma.
Our approach
We do not present our superfoods as medicines. Instead, we look at peer-reviewed studies to better understand their nutritional profile, traditional use and naturally occurring bioactive compounds.
Camu Camu
Camu camu is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and also contains polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds.
One recent randomized crossover clinical trial studied camu camu extract in adults with overweight and elevated triglycerides. The study found changes in liver fat and liver injury markers after camu camu supplementation. Further information
Another human study in smokers compared camu camu juice with vitamin C tablets containing equivalent vitamin C. The researchers observed stronger effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in the camu camu group, suggesting that compounds beyond vitamin C may contribute to its profile. Further information
Why we use it:
Camu camu fits our range as a naturally vitamin C-rich fruit powder with a bright, tart flavour and strong antioxidant-focused research interest.
Red & Black Maca
Maca is a root from the Peruvian Andes, traditionally consumed as a daily food. Scientific interest has focused on different maca colours, including red and black maca.
Preliminary evidence that elite athletes will benefit from taking black maca (Black maca supplementation intake) to improve their inflammation levels and physical fitness. Further information
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human study investigated red and black maca extracts. The study reported effects on mood, energy, health status and chronic mountain sickness score, with different profiles observed between red and black maca. Further information
Preclinical studies suggest that different maca colours may have different biological profiles. For example, black maca has been studied in relation to sperm production in rats, while red maca has been studied in testosterone-induced prostate enlargement models in rats. These findings are interesting scientifically, but they should not be interpreted as direct human health claims. Further information
Black maca supplementation can have a positive effect on improving the performance of elite handball players who engage in high-intensity movements by enhancing their isokinetic muscle function and endurance. Further information
Why we use it:
Maca is central to our brand because it combines Andean tradition, daily ritual use and a growing body of scientific research.
Lucuma
Lucuma is a naturally sweet fruit from Peru, traditionally used in desserts, drinks and daily foods. Compared with maca and camu camu, the scientific evidence for lucuma is still developing and is mainly focused on nutritional composition, antioxidant activity and naturally occurring plant compounds. Further information
Why we use it:
Lucuma brings natural sweetness, a smooth caramel-like flavour and a nutrient-rich fruit profile, making it ideal for breakfast bowls, smoothies, yoghurt and healthier desserts.
Our interpretation
Scientific research on traditional superfoods is growing, but not all ingredients have the same level of evidence. Camu camu currently has the strongest human clinical research among our ingredients. Maca has promising human and preclinical studies, especially around red and black varieties. Lucuma is best positioned as a natural, nutrient-rich fruit powder with culinary and traditional value.
Our commitment is simple:
premium ingredients, honest communication and no exaggerated medical claims.
